You Have To Stand For Something

You have to stand for something, or you will fall for anything.

I have heard that saying hundreds of times in my life. I have been known to say it myself.

At some point in our life we begin to understand the whole circle of life thing. But, being young, we think yeah okay, but not to me. Not now. Maybe a long, long time from now. I am young, I am invincible. Mortality is a long time off.

Then, if we are one of the ones that get to enjoy that illusion for many years, eventually something happens and we realize that it really could happen to us. The message finally hits home that we are mortal.

One frequent result of this acceptance is that people will begin to think what happens when I am not here?

We might begin to access our life course up to that point. Wait, there is still time to change our course. Or, wow, I waited too long and that chance is gone forever. Victories, mistakes, wonderful memories, missed chances, loves, hurts; all of it is mentally inventoried and graded.

At some point the question enters our mind, what do I stand for?

  1. Ugh.... I'm 30 and this has recently hit home, with life, kids, my moms health, just everything. Its inevitable (spelling) isn't it. WE're gonna die. Damn! :) I still don't know what I stand for yet either.....
